Taranaki have defended the Ranfurly Shield for a second time this season, comfortably seeing off Wanganui 51-7 in New Plymouth.

The hosts surged away in the second half after leading the Heartland Championship side just 11-0 at halftime.

They scored six of their seven tries in the second spell while hooker Cole Baldwin crossed for Wanganui's lone try with 20 minutes remaining.

Taranaki winger Frazier Climo scored the first of his two tries and landed two penalties for his team's first half points.

Other tries in the second half went to halfback Jamison Gibson-Park (2), winger Waisake Naholo, flanker Jarrad Hoeata and lock Kane Barrett.

Taranaki's first Shield defence of the year was a 67-16 of King Country last week.
