Boat explosion in Marlborough Sounds

At approximately 9am this morning (24th Feb) the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter was dispatched to the scene of a boat explosion at Waikawa Bay in the Marlborough Sounds.

It is understood the vessel had completed refuelling at the marina refuel berth when an explosion occurred. A 42 year old and his 7 year old son, from Wellington were both thrown across the vessel in the explosion and both suffered moderate injuries. They received treatment at the scene from the helicopters onboard intensive care paramedic, assisted by St John ambulance road crews. The father and son were both airlifted to Wellington Hospital for further medical care. The NZ Fire Service were also in attendance.
