Hooker bombs out in pole vault

Steve Hooker's Olympic pole vault title defence ended quickly on Friday night, the Australian exiting the final without registering a single clearance.

Hooker began the competition by passing at 5.50m and then missed all three of his attempts at 5.65m.

Hooker, 30, has endured a torrid 12 months as he battled a case of the yips since bowing out in the qualifying round of the 2011 world championships without clearing a single bar.

But hopes had risen that he was getting back to form after he cleared 5.72m at a meet in Poland late last month.

He also advanced through the qualifying round at the London Games with ease on Wednesday.

But Hooker never looked comfortable in the final.

He went under the bar on the first attempt and did not even get off the ground in round two.

His final attempt was the best of the lot, but he still dislodged the bar.

There was better news in the semis of the men's 4x100m relay where the team of Anthony Alozie, Isaac Ntiamoah, Andrew McCabe and Joshua Ross finished fifth in a slick time of 38.17 seconds, equalling the Australian record.

In was the seventh fastest time overall and allowed them to advance to Saturday's final.
