Twitter erupts over Pearson, Meares gold

NZ Newswire August 8, 2012, 12:53 pm

Wind the clock back a day and Twitter was being flooded with complaints about Australia's Olympic silver streak.

But by Wednesday morning it was awash with gold and glory for hurdler Sally Pearson and cyclist Anna Meares, after their nail-biting victories in London overnight.

Australia first woke to news that Meares had beaten arch-rival Victoria Pendleton of Great Britain to claim track cycling women's sprint gold medal.

While the 28-year-old is yet to break a self-imposed social media ban, she became a trending topic on Twitter as thousands of her compatriots sent messages of congratulations.

"OMG @AnnaMeares is a LEGEND ... CONGRATULATIONS girl!! Loved being apart of that Aussie Gold in the stands" posted swimmer Stephanie Rice, who was among dozens of athletes who watched both Meares' and Pearson's wins from the grandstand.

Road cyclist Robbie McEwen added: "@AnnaMeares so proud of you Anna, awesome riding girl! Gold!"

"I'm so bloody proud of @AnnaMeares Superb stuff." wrote Formula One driver Mark Webber.

Sally Pearson's inspirational photo finish in the women's 100m hurdles final quickly took over as one of the top trends in Australia, with praise coming from every direction - from Lara Bingle to Prime Minister Julia Gillard.

"So proud of our newest Olympic gold winners Anna Meares and Sally Pearson. Golden performances from two inspirational women. JG #goaussies" Ms Gillard posted.

"Simply fantastic Sally. Well deserved. Well done!!!" said Australian track legend Cathy Freeman.

"Sally Pearson. Wow. Unbelievable. You are a legend and an inspiration. So proud to be an Australian. #London2012." wrote three-time Olympian Libby Trickett.

Rugby union player Matt Giteau, now based in France, joined in on the applause.

"What a run!! Showed so much class and delivered for Australia.. Sally Pearson thank u! Saved me from copping more flak at training tomorrow", the former Wallaby star said.

Diver and 2008 Olympic gold medallist diver Matthew Mitcham was among the first to react to Pearson's win, which brought Australia's gold medal tally to four.

"AND SALLY PEARSON JUST WON THE HURDLES!! WAAAAHOOOOO ^_______^ holy mackerel, I'm tired from being so excited all evening. Nails. Gone." Mitcham posted.
