Palace boss Freedman needs more depth to squad

Dougie Freedman insists he needs to add to his squad to make Championship Crystal Palace competitive this season.

Speaking after seeing the Eagles lose 2-1 to Blue Square South side Welling, Freedman said he had learnt some lessons about his squad ahead of the forthcoming campaign.

He said: "The result was disappointing but this has taught me a few lessons about what players can do and what they can't do. It showed me that some of the young players are nowhere near ready for the first team and that we need more depth in the squad.

"We need to add to our squad to make us competitive in the Championship. We are way short in squad numbers. We need to add a left winger, possibly a right winger, a couple up top and maybe a centre-half."

First DF is going to recruit via an apparantly new approach to transfer dealings....The internet and DVD evidence!!!!! for goodness sake and now after spending the entire end of last season in performance freefall (certainly since Christmas) and all of the pre season it finally dawns on DF that we are not only low on numbers (Simple maths would lead to that conclusion.......several out and very few in) but that we lack the quality to be competative!!!!!! I understand to a point that DF was hoping that the academy would supplement the numbers and quality recently lost but that would seem a very naive approach to how to get a first 11 to perform and it also seems illogical to me that one 90 mins Vs Welling would lead to such a sweeping statement and seemingly complete change to pre season preparation.....
