Its part of New zealand culture. I would ask Paul Sheehan to come here to NZ and then open his mouth about the Haka.

But i do like the captian James cook quote

"There was not a man aboard Endeavour who, in the event of the ship's breaking up, would not have preferred to drown rather than be left to the mercy of the Maoris."

That shows the Strength and Spirit of the New Zealand People.

Its Human nature to destroy anything they afraid of..........I guess Paul Sheehan must tremble  everytime the haka is performed...........

Leave the Haka alone............play the game............

Paul Sheehan should focus more on the attrocities that Aboriginal peoples have had to suffer at the hands of the Australians. Saying sorry is the easy bit. There is absolutely no place in society for the continued and blatant racism experienced by Aboriginal people today in Australia. Focus on your own sad history and educating Australians on their own past so you may move forward together as a country rather than professing to be an expert on a subject and a people that you know nothing about.

I believe there are 2 key issues; 1.) Should the 'slitting movement' in the "Pango" Haka be removed...Definitely not! The execution of that movement is a very common one in Haka's historically, and also, we have to respect the creator of the Haka. As that is only a small part, it is also an important expression of the whole thing...

2.) Next time, I'd like the Australian Rugby Team to attempt to intimidate us with a Dance to the tune of "Waltzing Matilda" - and the moves orchestrated by Paul Sheehan...Let's see what he comes up with... He's obviously hot on New Zealand History...We can't help it if they can't make it! (History and Rugby - I'm talking about)

Come on guys let's look at it from purely an ignorant stand point. It is pretty gruesome .I can understand an Aussie feeling this way about the Haka .We have grown up with it , we may have some knowledge and been given some background information to support our experiences .As far as they are concerned it says I want to cut your throat .Maybe when they do the Haka there could be an explanation on the screen to inform people.
I know that the aboriginals have been treated very poorly but it really has no significance to this argument unless Sheehan was speaking from an informed perspective and was being openly anti maori which he is not expressing.

I dunno maybe we need to be a bit more open to sharing why and when we do Haka and inform other cultures .Why should we create enemies purely because of ignorance or do you think Sheehan should just google haka ,learn and shut up.

I love the haka but I grew up with it .

Splat has a fair point where they do not have the knowledge that we do. But in saying that, is not true they have another race alike the Maoris (the aboriginals) that they do not support. It was only a while ago they have said sorry for their mistreatment but still nothing has been done to unite the people. I personally feel sorry for him being scared of who we are. He obviously feels the auzzie team had a threat on them with the motions we displayed. Well he should learn to embrace the culture because guess what us kiwis are here now and beating your sorry arses!!

(GO THE MAORI - im half in half been brought up with both sides and love it :D)

btw im 14 and i can understand this better than this pro reporter he should go back to school and study.

As a #$%$ living abroad, I see the Haka and tears fill my eyes and my belly clenches and I feel enormously proud!
I know diplomatically the throat slit was probably not prudent  and I personally prefer the old Kamete Haka but I say go for it and if the opposition don't like it then tough "cheese"

For a nation that has its sport spread so widely and no longer cares about the world cup, you seem like a sad little man Paul Sheenan. NZ does not have the same money or scope with our sport but everything that we do is with passion, which cannot be brought.
As for the haka, as Tangata Whenua, (which is kiwi of any nationality althought I am of Maori descent) your ignorance is offensive. You then dare to quote from Captain Cook's view.
Why do you think Maori do the haka and make a stand? To show anyone considering to come in and take over from the savages (another term captain Cook and others called us) that if you come at us we will come straight back. It was this very attitude that kept Maori with some identity as the Colonialists arrived.
Unlike the Australia's indigenous (Aborigines) who were completely disregarded, disrespected and treated in appauling ways. No matter NZs history we at least as a country recognise both our cultures, Maori and European, in anthem, custom and yes our haka.
What do you as Australians do to show respect to the Aborigines and how are they represented with Australia Fair??
    Shame on you Mr Sheenan!

The Haka is a dance for those of the simplest intelligence and is not far removed from the neanderthal mentality of those who have been left behind in the evolutionary process.

The haka is not a dance - therefore the rest of your statement is irrelevant. BTW do you get your white pointy hat drycleaned?

The Haka I think is being overdone  - and  poking tongues out  is never a pretty site . What happened to the finish of the Haka  done by the older Allblacks where they all leapt in the air  a  real cheery finish to an established and liked performance

The HAKA is a dance, and as TBIG says it is for the simple minded
Only those  with a vacant space between the ears would insult their heritage by performing such a DANCE.

'real cheery finish' ... This is a haka, a HAKA, not Swan Lake, or an Irish Jig - You want cheery finishes, don't ever watch a haka.

    '
performing such a DANCE' ... See above, fool -

These fools - with tbigfru and sailcity adding themselves to the Stupid List - can afford internet access, but can't add anything of value to any debate.

om'on, there's nothing wrong with the haka, it's quaint and for foreign teams it's a treat, something they like to witness.
After all, "La Marseillaise" (French anthem) also mentions "throat slitting" and "splilling our ennemies' blood to quench our fields", no-one ever got offended, it's just a song, likewise haka is just a dance, a bit like a morris dance with the tongues out!
    No fuss over that!
