Scarlets confirm their New Zealand signings

The Scarlets have confirmed the signings of three New Zealanders, but they aren't the big-name players some fans had thought they would be.

The Llanelli-based club revealed last month it had signed former All Black hooker Tom Willis.

Now it has confirmed the signings of one-time Blues first-five James Arlidge and former Otago and Hawke's Bay loose forward Grant Webb.

The trio have signed on after club management, including coach Paul Turner and chief executive Gethin Jenkins made a talent-spotting trip to New Zealand earlier this year.

"The signings reflect the ambition of the Dragons ahead of the imminent stadium redevelopment," Jenkins said.

"When Paul and I travelled to New Zealand we were determined to secure quality and experienced players to compliment the experience and emerging talent already nurtured by the Dragons within the region.

"There are certainly exciting times ahead for the region and the signings reflect the growing confidence here at Rodney Parade."

While Willis is a household name, having played five tests, the other two signings are modest, at best.

Arlidge had previously being playing club rugby in Japan, representing the national team after completing International Rugby Board residency eligibility standards.

Webb, who has previously played for the Highlanders, has also played in the Japanese scene.

The modest nature of their talents is sure to give further credence to Welsh coach Warren Gatland's push for a reduction in the drop of overseas imports from six in each of the country's four regional sides.

Gatland is happy for the Welsh clubs to sign foreigners, as long as they are of top world-class.

He is becoming increasingly frustrated that spots which promising Welsh players could take are being snapped up by overseas journeymen.
