History of basketball at the Olympics:

Men's basketball became part of the Olympics in 1936.

Women's basketball became an Olympic sport in 1976.

The United States have dominated the sport, winning 13 of the 17 men's gold medals and six of the past seven women's gold medals.

Professional basketballers from the world's premier competition, the NBA, were allowed to take part in the 1992 Games for the first time.

That year, the United States "Dream Team" won gold with a star-studded line-up including Michael Jordan and Magic Johnson.

New Zealand has never won a medal in basketball. The Tall Blacks have appeared twice with their best finish 10th in 2004, while the Tall Ferns' best result from three appearances was eighth in Athens - both teams have not qualified for London.
