Weepu’s parents defend their son

Yahoo! New Zealand Sport April 12, 2012, 2:10 pm

The parents of under-fire Blues player Piri Weepu have leapt to his defence over claims he is overweight and unfit to be pulling on a Blues jersey.

The issue of Weepu's weight came under the microscope yet again after Blues skipper Keven Mealamu admitted that Weepu had been 'disappointing' since joining the Auckland based club for the new Super Rugby season.

Mealamu's open opinion on Radio Sport yesterday was all that was needed for sports fans to put the boot into the already under-fire All Black, sparking a response from his parents.

Speaking to the media yesterday Weepu's parents Ihaia and Kura Weepu said their son had an 'eight year journey' to win the Rugby World Cup, and reminded his critics that he finished the tournament under an injury cloud.

They also added that it is unfair to blame the Blues less than impressive season start on their son.

Piri is a hero! he was a vital part of our world cup winning team. GIVE THE GUY A BREAK!!!!!!!!!!!!!. As for all of the haters/racists........you should feel ashamed of yourselves. There is no room for that ignorant type of behaviour in NZ. Well done Piri's parents for sticking up for their son.
