Tyler Clary Biography

Clary will make his Olympic debut, but he has already made headlines for critical comments about Michael Phelps. The two trained together at the University of Michigan and Clary was unimpressed, telling his hometown newspaper that Phelps' work ethic was lacking. Clary subsequently admitted his comments were a mistake at the U.S. trials. Clary has qualified for two events, finishing second in the 200-meter butterfly to Phelps and second to Ryan Lochte in the 200 backstroke. The trials didn't come without disappointment since Clary finished behind Lochte and Phelps in the 400 individual medley, failing to qualify for the event he considers his best and refusing to speak to the media afterward. Clary won silver medals at the world championships in 2009 and 2011 in the 400 individual medley. His best opportunity for a medal in London could be in the backstroke since he earned a bronze in that discipline in the 2009 worlds.
