Wells bows out at X Games

New Zealander Jossi Wells ended the Winter X Games in Colorado on a disappointing note after failing to reach the final of the ski slopestyle competition.

Wells, who has won three medals at previous Winter X Games, didn't complete either of his two qualifying runs on Sunday to place 14th in the 16-man field at Aspen. The top eight advanced to the final.

The 22-year-old also struggled in his other event, the ski superpipe on the opening day on Wednesday where he placed 12th out of 16.

Last year Wells won a bronze medal in the ski big air class. He claimed silver medals in 2010 (superpipe) and 2008 (slopestyle).

Halfpipe and slopestyle have been given Olympic status for the first time at next year's Winter Olympics, opening the door for Wells to qualify for the Games in Sochi, Russia.
