Lauren Boyle has missed out on a medal in the 800 freestyle, but the Kiwi swimmer has shown she belongs at the Olympic level.
After breaking her New Zealand record to reach the final, she’s smashed it again by three seconds, finishing in 8.22.72.
She’s the only Kiwi to have reached a final, doing so twice - and the emotion poured out of Boyle post race.
Criticised for not racing in the 4 x 200 free, Boyle has proven it was exactly the right call.
Many swimmers promised but haven’t delivered here, but Boyle stands above.
