Diabetes patients throughout the country will have access to free insulin pumps from next month.

PHARMAC has announced it will be funding the pumps, which act as an alternative to daily injections, for the first time.

PHARMAC CEO Steffan Crausaz says they will help people achieve more stable management of their diabetes.

He says the project will cost about $4 million per year, for about 800 patients.

PHARMAC has also announced changes to access in blood glucose testing equipment, and is freeing up $10 million for new investments and technologies.
