More than 700 New Zealand punters got at least some of the $8762.90 Melbourne Cup trifecta yesterday.

TAB racing manager Michael Dore said trifectas were the most popular bet type for the Cup, with some taking the option of percentage trifectas.

Three punters also won percentages of the first winning stake of $81,938.30 after correctly picking Shocking, Crime Scene, Mourilyan and Master O'Reilly.

Mr Dore said the $17.1 million, overall turnover in New Zealand for the entire Melbourne Cup day was similar to last year.

Turnover on the big race alone was $7.91m -- the third highest on record.
