A shock win in the 149th running of the Melbourne Cup at Flemington.
The Mark Kavanagh-trained Shocking has secured the $3.3 million winner's cheque following a come-from-behind win. European entries Crime Scene and Mourilyan secured second and third places respectively.
Racing commentator George Simon says punters could not believe the result. Simon says everyone was initially surprised because Shocking ran from so wide. He says it is a great effort to come back from so far behind to clinch the win.
Trainer Mark Kavanagh was amongst those who did not think Shocking would pull through as he watched the race unfold.
It was a disappointing day for the New Zealand stayers in the field. Harris Tweed was the best of the Kiwi contingent finishing fifth, but Daffodil failed to live up to pre-race expectations, crossing the line in 11th place.
Simon says it just wasn't her day and her connections leave empty handed with only the top 10 receiving prize money.
