Australian table tennis stalwart Jian Fang Lay was knocked out of the women's singles after a gruelling seven-set contest with French star Xue Li.
At one stage Jian levelled the match, but couldn't hold off Xue in the last two sets, going down 4-3 on Sunday.
In a dramatic twist, Xue's coach was handed a red card and forced to leave the venue in the sixth set.
This is Jian's fourth Olympic Games, having made her debut in 2000 at Sydney.
She will join fellow Australians Miao Miao and Vivian Tan in the teams event when competition starts next week.6-2 7(9)-6
