How gymnastics works at the Olympics:
There are 18 gymnastics medals up for grabs at the Olympics, 14 in the artistic, and two each in the rhythmic and trampoline.
In the artistic component, gymnasts compete in the team, individual all-around and individual apparatus competitions, with men competing on six apparatus (floor, pommel horse, rings, vault, parallel bars, horizontal bar) and the women on four (vault, uneven bars, balance beam, floor).
Twelve five-member teams compete in team qualifying, with four gymnasts competing on each apparatus with three of their scores counting to the total score.
The top eight teams advance to team finals, top 24 all-around (with a maximum two per country) to the all-around final and top eight on each apparatus to the apparatus finals.
Scores are decided with one panel of judges starting from zero and adds points for requirements and difficulty.
A second panel of judges starts from 10 and deducts for execution and artistry. The final score is the sum of the two.
In the rhythmic competition, there is the individual all-around and the group competition, with gymnasts competing using hand-held apparatus - ribbon, rope, clubs and ball.In trampoline, scores are awarded based on difficulty and execution of routines. Athletes perform two routines in qualifying, with the eight best advancing for one routine in the final.
