Rape accusations against 'Baby Blacks' player

Police here and in South Africa are waiting on forensic results to get to the bottom of a rape allegation against a Baby Black player.

The alleged assault involving a 22-year-old Cape Town woman is said to have happened at an inner-city hotel just hours after the team lost the Under-20 world title to the Baby Boks.

New Age journalist in Cape Town De Wett Potgieter says initially it was described as a brutal attack by four rugby players.

He says the jury's still out on what happened as police are finding it hard getting information from the woman.

"She can't even tell the police what's happened, what happened to her and who did it. I think alcohol played a major role in this whole thing."

Mr Potgieter says police have had full cooperation from the players and management of the Baby Blacks team.

Foreign Affairs says the Under-20s have complied with local police following an alleged incident involving a player.

South African Police have confirmed they're investigating a rape allegation against one of the players.

An MFAT spokeswoman says police were happy for all members of the team to travel home.

She says the High Commission in Pretoria hasn't requested special treatment for the individuals concerned.

The New Zealand Rugby Union says the team cooperated with Cape Town police when the issue was raised before it left.

Police spokesman Colonel Vish Naidoo says the allegation was made by a 22-year-old Cape Town woman.

"In the case she alleged that she was raped in the early hours of Saturday morning and this prompted us to open a case of rape."
