The hockey world is reeling after a top player was killed in a on-field accident in Perth.
The WA Today newspaper reports that 24-year-old Lizzie Watkins was playing first-grade hockey for the North Coast Raiders team with her sister, when the ball struck her on the head.
It is believed the ball may have deflected off her own stick.
Watkins was revived after she collapsed on the field, but she died on the way to hospital.
News of her death spread quickly through the hockey community, with Olympic gold medalist Jamie Dwyer taken twitter to express his condolences.
"All the kookaburras thoughts are with the Watkins family after the devastating news today. Such a sad day in the hockey world," he wrote.
As a mark of respect the Australian men's team wore black armbands in the final of their Olympic test event in London.6-7(7) 7-5 6-4

My son played hockey and watching the amount of players who get hit especially in the head i have always wondered why they don't wear protective gear especially helmets. Its a bloody dangerous game. Those balls are as hard as rocks......When you see what ice hockey players wear it seems bazaar that grass hockey players don't at least wear a light weight helmet....Maybe the death of Lizzie Watkins might change that ...RIP
ReplyIt also happened at an Auckland girls school some years ago but fortunately the student survived, be it with brain damage. Maybe they should wear helmets.
ReplyDangerous game, several players I know have been seriously injured by sticks or balls, one, a National representative player took a full swing to the face, made a right mess.
ReplyCan't comprehend the thumbs down for Adam's comments, eloquent words from him.
1 ReplyYou are so right Ace....I should have added that I am really feeling for the family and friends at this time but this type of attention grabbing headline gets me wound up. Yahoo could have been a bit more sensitive.
