Scholz says imports not bad for NZ netball

Newstalk ZB - October 29, 2009, 6:40 am

All but one of the New Zealand ANZ Championship franchises have confirmed their import players for next season.

The Mystics have signed Jamaican defender Althea Byfield while the Steel will welcome back Australian shooter Megan Dehn. Australian defender Peta Stephens is locked in for the Tactix while the Magic have signed Australian defender Peta Scholz, with midcourter Frances Solia no longer deemed an ineligible player.

The Pulse, who are allowed two imports, have Australian shooter Jane Altschwager signed on but are awaiting confirmation of their second player.

There is concern in some quarters that Australian imports are hampering the opportunity for another kiwi up and comer to develop, however, Scholz insists the influx of international talent is not a negative for New Zealand netball. She says being a mentor to some of the younger players can be just as valuable. Scholz says she will look to help guide the emerging talent at the Magic for the next few years and is happy to be more than just a player for the team.
