Netball's Harrison hoist got a rare public outing as the Silver Ferns fine-tuned their combinations ahead of the third and final Test against Australia in Christchurch on Sunday.
The tricky lifting manoeuvre made a huge impact when the Northern Mystics unveiled it in their trans-Tasman netball league win over the Melbourne Vixens back in May this year.
It's been used only sporadically since, and has yet to make an appearance for the Silver Ferns in the international arena.
At the end of Saturday's training session, goal keep Katrina Grant and defender Anna Harrison did a series of lifts, while injured captain Casey Williams put up the shots on goal.
Silver Ferns coach Waimarama Taumaunu was relaxed about the manoeuvre, pointing out that it was only one option in an array of defensive strategies.
"If we're going to use it, we have to practice it - that's all you've seen here today, just in case we use it."
Harrison has played the last two Tests - both narrowly won by New Zealand - at wing defence, but may get a run in the circle on Sunday if young defender Kayla Cullen gets some court time as expected.
Harrison, who's played 66 Tests for New Zealand since her debut in 2002, says the hoist works only if a number of factors align.
"There are lots of different elements that need to be in the right place for it to happen," she told NZ Newswire.
"If everything falls into place, I know when it's right to call it. Then it's just about making sure the other defenders are in the right position as well and able to lift you."
Like any defensive move against the shot on goal, Harrison says the hoist can't be decided ahead of time.
"It's just something to add to your box of tricks."

I agree with John and also his sentiments about millions around the world re soccer. Also stupid; people who play soccer suffer injuries too. You need to do what I do STUPID, don't read articles about sports that you think are pathetic; but I don't try to inflict my views on others. Please leave our pathetic little sport to those of us who enjoy it and #$%$ off!
ReplyThe games certainly sped up over the last few years making it more enjoyable from my point of view because it means physical contact is becoming more unavoidable.
ReplyStupid person.....Netball is enjoyed by hundreds of thousands of players and spectators alike. it keeps girls fit, encourages team work, builds friendships between females, locally, nationally and internationally. Girls and women play it because they enjoy doing so. I for one encourage my children to play whatever sport they enjoy because it is good for them as per the above reasons.
1 ReplyYou have me there Stupid. I did rise to the bait; however I say, each to their own. I'm a pensioner now but Netball was the first organised team sport I played and as our traditional national female sport, it remains dear to my heart. I am breathless at the speed, dexterity, fitness and nous displayeded by the Diamonds and Silver Ferns. Furthermore I think any sport that gets our kids off their behinds and involved is hardly pathetic.
1 ReplyPersonally I think soccer is pathetic, however millions around the world would no agree. While I rarely watch netball at least goals are scored and at the end it is never nil all or one nil as is the case with soccer. However everyone to their own likes and dislikes and stupid person you have no right whatever to continually down cry sport as you do, just keep it to yourself like I do and make positive comments.
