Taumaunu keen to test youngsters

New Zealand netball coach Waimarama Taumaunu is looking forward to letting loose some exciting up-and-comers against her more established Silver Ferns in next month's trials.

Taumaunu on Monday named 25 trialists as she looks to finalise her line-up for September's opening three-Test Constellation Cup series against Australia.

The trialists are a mix of current Silver Ferns and national accelerant squad members, with a selection of six invited players adding extra intrigue to the four-day trials beginning in Auckland on August 13.

"The idea of the trial is to give them an opportunity on a level playing field against the incumbents to put pressure on," she told NZ Newswire.

Taumaunu is particularly interested in seeing what's on offer in the midcourt, where the retirement of Temepara George and Liana Leota has left the Silver Ferns a little light on experience.

Youngsters Keshia Grant, who showed promise with Canterbury Tactix, and Southern Steel rookie Gina Crampton have caught the selectors' attention in that area, despite limited on-court time in the trans-Tasman league.

Others to be given a chance include wing defender Elias Shadrock, who featured in the Magic's recent title-winning run, and Central Pulse goal defence Te Huinga Reo Selby-Rickit.

Northern Mystics' shooter Bailey Mes, who faces a huge challenge for court time lining up behind Silver Ferns Cathrine Latu and Maria Tutaia, is another to get a run.

"Bailey's a young woman who's not seen a great deal of court time, but we think she's got a great deal of potential," Taumaunu said.

"We want to put pressure on and see how people perform - I'm really hoping for some high intensity matches."

The trials run from August 13-16 in Auckland, with the Constellation Cup team named on August 20.
