Michael Campbell is among a number of big golfing names who have missed the cut at the US Open.

Campbell, who won the tournament in 2005, joined defending champion Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland and another former titleholder in Australian Geoff Ogilvy in exiting early.

Among others who failed to make the cut at the testing Olympic Club course was English world No.1 Luke Donald.

Former world No.1 Tiger Woods, who is chasing his 15th major title, shares the halfway lead with fellow Americans Jim Furyk and David Toms at one-under.

Furyk, the US Open champion nine years ago, shot one-under 69 in the second round, while Woods and former US PGA champion Toms each carded a 70.

Campbell, the only New Zealander in the field, improved on his opening 79 with a four-over 74.

He dropped just one shot through the particularly demanding stretch of the first six holes before picking up his solitary birdie of the day at the short par-four seventh to be even at the turn.
