Sir Fred was one of the dominating rugby personalities of the 20th Century. LIke Bob Scott, Sir Fred was a World War II veteran and played for the All Blacks after the war, and then captained the side when they toured South Africa in 1949 before retiring. But it was as a coach where he perhaps had the most impact, as he coached Auckland from 1957-63, which included a wonderfully successful Ranfurly Shield rein. Appointed All Blacks coach 1966, his side never lost one of the 14 tests under his tutelage.
