Bad note struck by the Blues

It must have been a quiet day in the Blues' office before it circulated a media release calling on their long-suffering fans to stay silent at key times during home games next season.

The edict put out by the Blues, featuring comments from CEO Andy Dalton, former All Black Grant Fox, Eden Park general manager Murray Reade and Blues marketing manager Grant McKenzie simply isn't worth the paper it is printed on.

One of the aspects touched on by Blues top brass is that staying silent during a kicker's build-up would see the "reinstating of an old Eden Park tradition".

Well how about this for an Eden Park "tradition" that the Blues and Auckland Rugby should be more worried about "reinstating" - having winning Super Rugby and provincial sides.

Aside from Auckland's impressive run in 2007, where they regained the Ranfurly Shield and went unbeaten in the Air New Zealand Cup, the pickings have been slim for the region's fans.

Dalton called on fans to emulate what the All Blacks encountered in their two recent games in Ireland, total silence when goal-kickers are lining up their shots.

He stated: "Whether it is for local matches or internationals, we'd like to call on New Zealanders to adopt the same approach."

Eden Park has become a fortress for the All Blacks in recent seasons.

And the atmosphere created by crowds in tests was something touched on by the Wallabies in the build-up to their eventual loss to the ABs in August.

Senior players said the atmosphere, including the fact fans weren't afraid to make a noise when the Wallabies lined up shots at goal, was an intimidating one.

And it was an ever-present factor in the fact the Wallabies haven't won at Eden Park since 1986.

While it might be PC and in some people's eyes 'respectful' to stay silent, there is nothing wrong with jeering the opposition.

What works in Ireland might be fine and dandy.

But each to their own.

And if jeering is the way that works best for a home side's best endeavours at Eden Park, then so be it.

It would be wise for Blues and Auckland Rugby officials to remember that it ain't always rosey for fans attending home Blues matches at Eden Park or North Harbour Stadium.

The latter is a nightmare for fans.

North Harbour Stadium can be a dog to get to - the threat of rain or any kind of crash on Auckland's motorway brings with it a snails-pace trip to Albany.

Once there, horrendous lines for food and drink and one of the country's least-friendly staff await.

Eden Park isn't that better, although at least the issue of getting there is eased by the public transport routes. Although that is never a sure thing!

And next year the facilities for fans will be limited by the major pre-World Cup construction project.

That said, it's a bit cheap for Blues officials to put out an edict on how they want their fans to behave.

And again, the Blues and Auckland Rugby top-brass should be more worried about ensuring they have teams that warrant their fans shelling out their hard-earnt dollars to follow, rather than telling them how they would like them to behave!

What do you think?

If you attend a Blues game next year, are you going to jeer or take Dalton's advice and keep quiet?

Neil you missing your sub editor? "Eden Park isn't that better". As for silence for kicks YES! YES! YES! Call me an old boring traditionalist but wasn't it great when the Munster cauldron went deathly silent for penalty kicks. Good sportsmanship is something to be encouraged and crowds shouldn't be excepted from this philosophy. Definitely over the American basketball attitude of creating as much noise as possible for opposition kickers and the timing before a world cup

agree - one crash on the motorway to albany and yes it stuffs the traffic right up. that has happand to myself multiple times.
and again NO to the silence imo. i suppose its really upto the individual themselves, but what happand in ireland was the way THEY do things. back here in NZ crowds love to cheer jeer on the opposition. me myself wouldnt have it any otherway but to jeer the likes of Matthew Giteau hoping he is going to miss.

Aucklanders really have to get over that North Harbour Stadium thing. It works the same way round for us Harbour fans as well if there's a crash anywhere around spaghetti junction. The Blues are our team too dickheads!

For most people in New Zealand the extra trip over the bridge is not that much different to attending Eden Park if you've already flown in from somewhere else. Plus the traffic has been pretty good since they expanded the highway just south of Constellation Drive.
