Time to ban alcohol from major sporting events?

Wow, what a contrast between the diabolical scenes at Eden Park on Saturday night and the serene superiority of the World Rowing Championships in Karapiro.

I hope every single idiot who threw a beer bottle - empty or not - on the pitch at Eden Park is banned from sporting grounds for five years.

It's simply unacceptable - and embarassing - that at a time we're showcasing the biggest, and best run, sporting event in New Zealand for almost two decades some mindless morons drag us back to the dark ages.

The beer bottle lobbing was always bad enough at the cricket ODIs at Eden Park - but to see it make an appearance in other sports is just mindblowing.

And I think it's time for an ultimatum - either cease the shocking behaviour or risk having 'dry' days for certain sporting events.

Because make no mistake, a large part of the problem on Saturday night was due to the easy availability of alcohol.

I've heard explanations today which says the double header of England versus Papua New Guinea and then New Zealand verus Australia was a large part of the problem. It gave people too long to drink.

To those that seriously believe this I hope they get enough oxygen with their heads so far up their own backsides.

What happened to personal responsibility? Have they not seen the huge queue at the Kingslander for hours before an All Blacks test?

I was priveleged to be at Lake Karapiro for the entire championships. People were sitting out in sun for upwards of six hours, with alcohol available, yet no-one felt it necessary to disrupt proceedings, cause problems or act like a dick-head.

No, the biggest problem is, and will continue to be, our attitude to alcohol and it's close relationship with the largest sports - cricket, rugby and league.

And that's why someone has to lay down the law and say 'enough is enough'.

All it takes is for one drunken idiot to get on the park, or one bottle misthrown and injuring a player, to turn us from the potential hosts of major sporting events to so far down the list we'll never see them again.

That would be a tragedy, because if Karapiro proved anything it's that we're more than capable of having the best of the world come here and put a show on for them.

So I want to see rugby, cricket and league given one more opportunity. Behave or else. And if people persist in this moronic behaviour let's shut it down at its source.

No alcohol in grounds. People who have been drinking to be banned from the grounds. Because the risk to the rest of us - those who go to these events and behave - is far greater than to those who probably won't remember the bloody game anyway.

And there is precedent for this kind of move.

In Scotland a riot at a Scottish Cup final in the early 1980s caused the authorities to ban alcohol in football grounds in Scotland.

Even in the well-stocked corporate boxes drinking while the game was in play was illegal. At half-time a cup of tea was the only beverage on offer.

And you know what? It worked. While the English hooligans continued their rampage around Europe Scottish fans, with one or two exceptions, became famed for their behaviour.

Unfortunately we in New Zealand are heading towards infamy unless we do something about it.

After all, it's not what we're drinking, it's how we're drinking. And if this weekend's disgrace at Eden Park shows anything it's a certain proportion of us are drinking like idiots.

No more.

So what do you think? I realise this move will punish those of us who can actually have a beer and not act like a moron - but for the greater good (ie big sporting events continuing to come here) it may be necessary.

Were you at Eden Park on Saturday? Or were you one of the idiots throwing bottles and want to defend yourself?

I appreciate all your comments.

I was at that game security was bull5h1T they should have more security up in the crowds to immediatley start taking out the people who are throwing bottles, soon enough people will get the picture and calm down. Problem solved, it is better to be proactive than reactive. The security was just standing on the field watching the crowd. Just need to make an example of a few people. I dont blame alcohol at all it was just a few idiots in the crowd starting everyone off.

Nah just ban Rugby League from major sports events. It's a rink-a-dink load of guff anyway.

Please ban alcohol at major sporting events. This booze culture is just getting ridiculous. I was at Eden Park on Saturday and I can honestly say the crowd behaviour was nothing short of disgusting. Same can be said for all sorts of other matches I've been to. People cannot control themselves.

totally agree - if you can't sit through an eighty minute game without a beer then stay home or head to and AA meeting. ban the booze at the parks, perhaps families might start going to games then

I was there and the alcohol definitely fueled the problems on the night. We got hit with full bottles of beer and we saw elderly people and young children getting and thats not right! My issue was safety and when the venue/event staff/cops can't keep the event in check then it ain't worth it. I'm never going back to Eden Park.

If you watched the game like me you would of seen the fights break out on the field ,but hang on these are players and they are not drinking, and you are concerned about a plastic bottle injurying a player, come on get real, you will never stop drinking at a big match to much money to be made
