Get him back in the game
June 18, 2009

Here's a question for you – if you were one of the management staff out at the Warriors would you chase Clinton Toopi and try to get him back to league?
After reading today that Toopi has been named in the Bay Of Plenty rugby squad for the upcoming Air New Zealand Cup I guess for now the question is answered.
But, given the injury problems the Warriors have had this season already, in my mind I can't see why they're not ringing the former Kiwis star and asking him to consider coming back in to the fold.
Personally I hope Clinton succeeds in rugby. And if you've followed this blog you'll know it hurts me to write that. I hate to see league players wasting their time in rugby.
But Clinton is an exceptionally talented footballer and his skills have obviously impressed the coaching staff down in the Bay.
I also think it's a crying shame he's been let to leave rugby league.
I remember vividly the way he tore the Australian test team to pieces on a number of occasions and how just pulling on the Kiwis jersey seemed to make him 10 foot tall and bullet proof.
And not only is he a star player but he is a nice bloke as well.
He is, from a journalism point of view, one of the players I always loved to interview.
And his on-field prowess made it easy to come up with something to say.
But, enough of the flowery stuff.
Would he be an asset to the Warriors?
Yes, I think he would be a great fit. He'd add some attacking flair to a backline that is relying predominantly on Manu Vatuvei and Wade McKinnon to come up with something special.
Toopi, Lance Hohaia, Stacey Jones and Vatuvei are all stars in their own right but put them together and they become a stunning attacking unit.
We saw that in 2005 with the Kiwis.
Add in McKinnon and in my opinion you'd have a dangerous outfit capable of scoring plenty of tries.
Jones' return to the NRL is proof that the talented players can come back from Super League and still foot it.
And I don't think Toopi would have any problem fitting straight back into the mix.
And just to throw another cat amongst the pigeons here's another question for you – who else would you love to see playing for the Warriors again?
I'd love to see Brent Webb back, Ali Lauitiiti could still be devastating in the NRL and what about Francis Meli lining up on the opposite wing to Vatuvei?
Let me know what you think.
