It's time to knock the Aussies off - AGAIN
April 27, 2009

If you were a spiritual man, or woman or child for that matter, you'd have to think the football gods are on the Kiwis' side at the moment.
With the Anzac Test just around the corner I don't think I'm alone in believing this could be the chance to finally knock the Aussies off their spot at the head of the rugby league world.
Before you all come out and bag me and say I've gone stark raving bonkers and forgotten the fact that the Kiwis are world champions, let me set something straight.
Despite the fact the Stephen Kearney coached side thumped the Kangaroos to win the world cup last year, the International Federation still holds the Aussies as the number one side in the game because of the number of games they won in 2008.
But this is as good a chance as any for the Kiwis to strike.
And they have the form going in to the game to do the damage.
If you look at the performances over the past week or so you can see the Kiwis in the NRL competition are on song.
So here's my take on who might be in the Kiwis squad for the test in Brisbane on May 8.
Benji Marshall's performance on Sunday against the Knights in the second half was nothing short of awesome.
OK, he did kick the ball out on the full three times in the first half, but he got himself sorted and got his game on.
Roy Asotasi's performance for the Rabbitohs over the few weeks has been nothing short of outstanding.
Asotasi in my mind has demanded the captain's role back from Kearney and again from my point of view is the best candidate for the job.
He will go all day if he has to and he won't be afraid to spill blood to win.
As per usual I expect the Warriors to make up the basis of the squad.
Lance Hohaia's return from injury should cement him the fullback's role and Manu Vatuvei will be a sure starter on the wing – barring any injuries over this next weekend of course.
Jerome Ropati is sure to take one of the centre places alongside Steve Matai and Nathan Fien will be the stand-off. I expect Marshall to be named as the Kiwis halfback.
Simon Mannering will take his spot in the second row, the other spots in the back row will go to David Fa'alogo and Jeremy Smith who will be lock.
The bolters for me out of the Warriors will Ben Matulino and Russell Packer.
I'd hazard a guess that Packer may in fact be the starting prop alongside Asotasi with Isaac Luke taking the hooker spot.
Matulino in my mind deserves a spot on the bench as does Frank Pritchard, Dene Halatau would be the utility and cover for hooker.
I've left a spot on the bench for Rapira, if he is able to play I would have him in my side.
If he is ruled out I would call up Bronson Harrison or Adam Blair.
You will see I have also left a wing out.
I may be wrong, I certainly hope I am, but I get the feeling there will be some controversy surrounding Taniela Tuiaki.
Let's not forget Tuiaki wanted to play for Tonga at last year's world cup. He and Fui Fui Moi Moi were forced to sit out the tournament because the RLIF ruled them ineligible until the semi-finals as they had both played for the Kiwis in 07.
So there is a fairly high likelihood in my mind that if he is selected there will be issues.
I hope there isn't because to me he is an automatic pick.
If he is unable to play I would put Luke Covell in on the wing for his goal kicking ability if nothing else.
So here is my team – with brackets of course:
1. Lance Hohaia
2. Taniela Tuiaki (Luke Covell)
3. Steve Matai
4. Jerome Ropati
5. Manu Vatuvei
6. Nathan Fien
7. Benji Marshall
8. Roy Asotasi (c)
9. Isaac Luke
10. Russell Packer
11. Simon Mannering
12. David Fa'alogo
13. Jeremy Smith
Interchange: Ben Matulino, Frank Pritchard, Dene Halatau, Sam Rapira (Bronson Harrison / Adam Blair)
Let me know what you think and of course list your Kiwis side.
