It's been said that pure emotion shouldn't be the only motivating force when it comes to writing a column. But on this occasion, I'm happy to admit that pure disdain, one of the rawest emotions, is the motivation for this piece.

Scyld Berry, you're a patronising prat.

If any of you need reminding or made aware of who I'm referring to, Scyld Berry is the insulting old hack who chose to appease what, I presume, is an archaic audience at the Sunday Telegraph, with what amounted to nothing more than a crude and totally out-of-order attack on the Black Caps' credibility to face the Poms in the current test series.

This is just some of what this silly old fart wrote: "Why on earth is England playing New Zealand in the first place? To contest the Ashes next summer, England now needs opposition far more fibrous."

He continued with: "There will be something seriously wrong with England, or the weather, if the hosts do not win this series 3-0. New Zealand will be overwhelmed by the occasion at Lord's, by the pace and bounce at Old Trafford and by the swing at Trent Bridge."

There was more of this condescending crap which, after reading, I'm absolutely certain that I never need to meet Mr Berry to know that he is typical of that ghastly, born-to-rule, Noah's Ark tribe of Poms who still think that the sun sets mostly on the British Empire and act accordingly.

These ridiculous relics also refuse to realise that although they invented the game, the paltry record of their team for most of recent memory has removed any reason whatsoever for English cricket to be regarded with the same respect that the Aussies have commanded over a similar period.

The starkest evidence of this prolonged period of mediocrity can be seen with the Ashes where the Aussies have dominated the majority of the series for the last twenty years or so.

Earlier this year, the Poms arrived here with certain visiting commentators mouthing that they would bury the Black Caps in both the one-day and test series.

But that was not to be. The Black Caps convincingly outplayed them to win the one-day series 3-2. After carrying on the winning way by taking out the first test, Ryan Sidebottom proved the decisive factor in our team succumbing 1-2.

But if any of Scyld Berry's readers weren't aware of those stats, he or she would swear the Poms must have murdered the Black Caps in every encounter.

Quite simply, Scyld Berry and his antiquated attitude is why I so relish the fact that the power and control of world cricket have effectively moved to the Indian subcontinent.

I genuinely believe that, whatever their faults, the administrators and commentators on the subcontinent will never bring that same naked arrogance and bias to the table as do the likes of Berry and his ilk that still sadly pollute English cricket.

Are you as hacked off with Scyld Berry as I am?

Before I sign off today, I must make mention of Brendon McCullum who has posted his second score in the nineties at Lord's. How damn frustrating that must be for the most exciting batsman in world cricket today.

Of course, the stubborn Mr Berry would take issue with that.
