Links of the Week
October 09, 2009

Below are the Links of the Week but first off a quick rant.
The All Whites take on Bahrain this weekend in a game that has huge implications for this country. The international exposure for New Zealand, if we reach the FIFA World Cup, would be huge - but there seems to be little to no interest in the game.
Especially compared to last weekend's Fight of the Century which had the dial turned to 11 on the hype-scale and failed to deliver. Let's face it; it was just a guy from Auckland assaulting a bloke from Gisborne. Something that happens most Saturday nights on streets around the country.
The All Whites have the chance of reaching the biggest stage in football for the first time in 28 years. Something people should be much more excited about. I don't want to focus on the rugby v soccer debate (which seems to get quite heated on our message boards) but the fact is you should get behind your country whatever the sport.
Is it the lack of any real star names in the All Whites squad? Or is it because the standard of football is below what we see on our TVs in the English Premier League each week?
When the return leg takes play next month it would be nice to see a crowd at Westpac Stadium that actually proves how passionate New Zealanders are about sport. When it comes to passion we as Kiwis talk a good game but compared to other countries our crowd support is pretty poor.
Rant over...now to some bigger issues like people falling on their faces.
Bahrain's last match
Bahrain qualified for this two-match playoff against the All Whites after an amazing away leg against Saudi Arabia where two goals were scored in injury time. The All Whites can expect that same kind of white-hot atmosphere in Bahrain.
Fight of the century?
The NHL season only just started but this is a real contender for beat-down of the season. Milan Lucic plays the part of David Tua, Jay Harrison is Shane Cameron.
50 face plants in three minutes
Among this cringe-worthy montage the boxer punching himself in the head has to be the winner.
New form of streaking
This American football fan manages to stop play by climbing up the goal-posts. Impressive effort.
That's a foul
You may have to watch this video a couple of times to see the vicious foul but keep your eye on the last defender at the six second mark. I'm guessing he got a red card.
It's science
Apparently the reason England keep losing in penalty shoot-outs is because they see the goal as smaller than their rivals do. That and their smaller throats which are more adverse to choking.
Drug or soccer team?
Alliance, Zephyr, Taz - one of those is a football team.
Bull ball
When you are down a man for a seven-a-side game it's probably not wise to let a bull make up the numbers.
Changing room tales
ESPN's Rick Reilly shares some funny experiences when it comes to interviewing players in the changing rooms, where clothing is optional.
Tat's interesting
NBA baller DeShawn Stevenson shows off his new off-season acquired tattoos which include Abraham Lincoln on his throat and a crack on his forehead.

There are plenty of world champion sportsmen and teams in NZ that get no recognition, so why does a team that cant make a world cup deserve any?
