Rest the seniors and play with flair

The pressure is on after last week's loss to South Africa but even if we lose tonight I'm not going to be jumping on the bandwagon to replace the coaches.

As far as I'm concerned we've got Graham Henry, Steve Hansen and Wayne Smith until 2011 and we can't do much about that.

But we can be smarter about what we do with the players.

We've got an overseas tour coming up and that would be a great time to blood a few young guys.

You may as well take a squad of youngsters and leave senior players like Richie McCaw, Dan Carter and Rodney So'oialo behind in order to start developing our next tier of player.

There's no use in out of form players trying to find form at the end of the year.

That will give the senior guys a few months off, allowing them an opportunity to recharge their batteries ahead of the next couple of years.

And resting the senior players is probably something we've got to do more often in the future to give their careers some longevity.

They're in good physical shape but when you're playing a really long season you can't keep up that top level form all the time, it's more about consistency.

And I think two years out from the World Cup is the time to give them a break and we can also find out just how good some of these young guys are!

I'd even rest Daniel Carter who, in my opinion, hasn't played that well since he came into the fray.

He had a few months off with his injury this season but he probably needs a bit of an off-season again. And it would give Stephen Donald an opportunity to cement a place.

As for how the All Blacks are playing?

It's pretty difficult to change things radically. It's a game of rugby after all. You've got to win your scrums, your lineouts and fight for the ball on the deck.

I just think we've got to be a bit smarter about what we do but I think the players themselves are overcomplicating things and trying too hard.

They just need to get out there and play footie - like they did in the last 20 minutes last week.

It was uncompromising, they weren't too scared to run the ball and, shit, they made more in-roads in that last 20 minutes than they did in the rest of the game.

The All Blacks could take a leaf out of the Bay of Plenty's book. Against Tasman on Thursday they were running it from all over the place and hitting their wingers early and they looked good.

And I agree with Mils Muliaina when he said this week the players aren't relying on their natural talents enough.

They're playing too much to systems rather than allowing themselves to be more creative and play to that abilities they do have.

Because you can't tell me that last 20 minutes last week was planned.

It's nice to have systems, but it's nice to have a bit of flair and allow the players to create things themselves.

On to the team and I don't think the changes in the forwards will make too much difference in the lineout because the Wallabies are pretty good there and they'll fancy their chances of winning their own ball and disrupting ours.

Last week I saw Brad Thorn go up for a lineout but he couldn't get up because there was no-one behind him lifting. And that's just bloody insane.

For an All Black to do that is bloody terrible. They're supposed to be the best of the best in this country.

But I do think we'll win more of our own ball and that will surely come through manipulation of the jumpers.

We've got four real good jumpers as well as Richie so there's no excuse for not using those options. But I don't think we're going to dominate in that area.

My hope for the backline is we get to see them run with the ball - and early in the game.

If we just start kicking the ball early then why the hell did we change the players?

Because at that point they're just chasing the bloody ball and we don't see their ability. The're just pressurisers and defenders.

We want to seem them play football and we might even see them do something that will capture the imaganation of the public again, something we're not doing by playing to the style of the South Africans.

Hopefully we just go out with a bit more open-mindedness this week - because I saw more from the Aussie backline in one game against the Springboks than our sterile backline has shown all season.

Because of the grey nature of some of rugby's laws, teams are too scared to play in their own half so the ball is booted down to the other end.

Kicking is taking over and people want to see running rugby, not a kick-fest that's turning people off.

Finally, I said earlier in the week that I was picking the Wallabies to take the test tonight and I still think the Aussies have the edge, especially on form.

But if the All Blacks can show what they did in the last 20 minutes last week earlier in the game tonight and get some confidence up then we'll see a better brand of rugby and more chance of the All Blacks winning.

So what do you think? Will the All Blacks win tonight? Should we rest the senior players for the end of year tour? And which youngsters do you want to see on that plane?

I appreciate all your comments.

I think let the nzrfu run the npc and allblacks, Let the big corporates own the super 14 and put a clause in for all black release. If Vodaphone owned the crusaders Dan cater would get a million to stay, we counteract the northern hemisphere player drain... telecom buys the blues, it has to happen the NZRFU do not have enough money.......

locks should practice lifting flankers on there own - in a shortened line we should have our four tallest athletes back or forward not short squat props - and each should have the strength and skill to lift or jump - 2 can lift 1 - 1 can lift 2 - or 3 can lift 4 or 4 lift 3 or 1 and 3 lift 2 or 3 and 4 lift 2 - a consideration for where the ball is thrown on our feed - at any opposition who is facing in the opposite direction - or directly opposite the heaviest person in the opposition -
