Forget the title, let's just get the win
September 12, 2009

So another weekend, another test match. I thoroughly enjoyed last week's game in Australia and I'm looking forward to the clash of the two best teams in the world in Hamilton tonight.
The early focus has been on the team selection, particularly with Stephen Donald outside Dan Carter.
I honestly don't think it makes much difference. Stephen and Dan have played in both five-eighths positions and they're both good at it.
In the end they're going to play inside/outside anyway and with that combination either can go into pivot, so for example if Carter goes into a contact zone then Donald will be there to take his place.
I think that's good thinking and I'm happy with the combination. They're both class players and if I works really well tonight you might see that it could stay like that.
And I also think it's the right call to move Ma'a Nonu out to centre. If they had dropped Ma'a to put in Isaia Toeava there it would have been an injustice.
With Isaia you don't know what you're going to get and Ma'a has been consistently good this year so let him play.
The only other selection people might be a little disappointed with was allowing Joe Rokocoko to have one more game.
He hasn't shown any form whatsoever and I include the tries he's scored in the Air New Zealand Cup. He got the ball and he scored but that's what wingers do. They're on the end of the chain.
He didn't have to do much to score - I think a bloody blind man could have scored some of those tries.
When you get the ball and just run five metres to score the try that's easy compared to being in close and doing some really hard graft.
And in the tests we just haven't seen him do much of that. He's been making mistakes and being bowled out over the touchline and we just don't expect that of our top-line players.
Cory Jane would have been a fine pick in place of Joe, but I would have been tempted to play Hosea Gear instead.
He's shown exceptional form over the last few weeks and it's pretty sad he's not getting the opportunity.
One of the things that Graham Henry has said is he will pick players on form - but in this case he's ignoring the form player and picking someone solely on their past reputation.
The thing I really want to see over the next two weeks is some pride in the All Blacks' performance.
I'm not worried about the Tri-nations title. I'm more worried about getting two good wins under the belt and if we come second, then we come second.
But at least that would mean we had won our last three games and that's more important than some trophy.
The other thing is we need to start blooding some of the younger players like Gear, Zack Guildford and Israel Dagg because the Aussies have been doing that with their youngsters and they're a season in front of us now.
Maybe that will come on the end of year tour - or even sooner if we lose tonight!
And that might mean the end of the line for All Blacks like Rodney So'oialo.
Rodney had a bit of a rest this year, but I don't think it's given him a spark. I thought the game he played for the Ranfurly Shield against Canterbury is the worst game I've ever seen him play.
It showed me he's not in the state of mind to play any football and I'm wondering why he's still in there at the moment.
Having said that, it's not all good news for the Springboks either. I think John Smit is actually not a prop's backside.
He's been found out big time. His technique isn't correct and that's where their scrum is suffering a bit.
You can't tell me the big guy behind him, Bakkies Botha, isn't pushing because he pushes like a b*****d.
We know why they took out the best hooker in the world and made him a prop - because they brought on Bismarck du Plessis who is a better field player - but he's the weak link in that scrum at the moment and we should be looking to exploit that.
It shouldn't surprise you that I think the All Blacks will win tonight, but whether they'll do enough to keep the Tri-nations alive I'm not so sure about.
Regardless of what happens, it still means next week is set up as a fantastic test match. And if we lose? Then the Aussies will have a chance to finish second in the Tri-nations.
And we don't want that to happen, do we?
So what do you think? Will we win tonight and score the four tries we need? Do the Aussies have a real chance of taking second spot in the Tri-nations?
And what about the continued selection of Joe Rokocoko and Rodney So'oialo (albeit on the bench) despite their lack of form?
Let me know as I appreciate all your comments.
