Female Indian runner accused of rape, being a man

(AP)A female runner from India was arrested on rape allegations made by her same-sex partner who claims the athlete is actually a man.

Pinki Pramanik was taken into custody in West Bengal and later remanded in custody until a hearing in two weeks. A court told health officials to run a gender test on the former Asian Games gold medalist.

Her live-in partner issued the complaint on Thursday. "[It] stated that the woman athlete was a male and has been cohabiting with her for the past several months with a promise to marry her, but later denied," a Calcutta police officer told Press Trust on India.

Pramanik denies both claims and is refusing to take the test.

"I have undergone numerous tests in my career as an athlete," she said, according to The Times of India. "Why should I agree to more ridiculous tests?"

She was a member of India's winning 4x400-meter relay team at the '06 Games in Doha.

The Athletics Federation of India doubts Pramanik could be stripped of her career medals, even if she fails the gender test.

"A lot of physical changes can take place in those six years," C.K. Valson said. "We never had any such complaint against her when she was an active athlete and naturally there was no question of subjecting her to a gender test."
